While the Italian language and culture has existed for over two millennia, Italy has only been united as one independent nation twice in its history. Once was under Roman rule from about 200 BC until almost 500 AD. Then, not again until 1860 when the regions of Italy banded together into the kingdom of Italy, vanquishing their foreign rulers. For several short years Firenze was the capital.
