Italy has been known since the time of the ancient Greeks as "the land of wine." It was actually the Etruscans that first established vineyards and wine production in the region, long before the time of Christ. Italy is the world's largest wine producer. In the 1960s and '70s Italian wines earned a reputation of being "cheap and cheerful" because wine exporters focused on volume sales aimed at the low-end market. But many of today's vintners have a new spirit and are producing some excellent wines to match. |
